Habit Two; Begin with the End in Mind/ the 7HHEP

"Management is doing things right;
leadership is doing the right things"
Peter Drucker and Warren Bennis

The leader in you
To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you're going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction.
How different our lives are when we really know what is deeply important to us, and keeping that picture in mind, we manage ourselves each day to be and to do what really matters the most. When you begin with the end in mind you gain a different perspective.

All things are created twice:
If you were to build a house you first form the idea in your head and put the plan on paper, this is your first creation. When you do start to physically build the house there will inevitably be some adjustments and variations to the construction. But the more time you spend on the first creation, and the deeper analysis you perform to your accommodation needs, the less variation you will end up enduring, and the more cost effective is your project. Same principle is applied to recreating ourselves.
To the extent which we understand the principles of the two creations and accept the responsibility for both, we act within and enlarge the boarders of our circle of influence.
To the extent to which we do not operate in harmony with these principles and do not take charge of the first creation, we diminish it.
Habit one is telling us that we are the creators, while habit two is our first creation; our leadership. But not all first creations are by conscious design; In our personal lives, if we do not develop our self-awareness and become responsible for our first creations, we empower other people and circumstances outside our circle of influence to shape much of our lives by default.

Leadership and management:
As quoted by the author:
"The leader is the one who climbs the tallest tree, surveys the situation and yells;"wrong jungle". But the busy, efficient producers and managers often respond; "shut up! We're making progress".
Management is the bottom line focus; it basically means how I can best accomplish certain things (this will be discussed in habit three). While leadership is the top line focus which reflects on;
what are the things I want to accomplish?
How do we create our own first creation?
As we did with house building we have to write our own script by using our imagination, our ability to visualize the uncreated worlds of potential that lie within us, and also by using our conscience which is our ability to make the contact of universal laws or principles with our own singular talents and avenues of contribution, and use our personal guidelines within which we can most effectively develop them.
And combing all that with our self-awareness; these endowments empower us to write our own script.
So let's start:
Write a personal mission statement:
Begin with the end in mind by writing a personal mission statement focusing on what you want to be and what you want to do, and on the values or principles upon which being and doing are based.
A personal mission statement based on correct principles becomes a standard for the individual. It becomes a personal constitution, the bases for making major, life-directing decisions, the bases for making daily decisions in the midst of circumstances and emotions that affect our lives. It empowers individuals with the same timeless strength in the midst of change.
Writing a personal mission statement takes deep introspective, careful analysis, thoughtful expression, and often many rewrites.
It should be reviewed regularly and make minor changes as the years bring additional insights or changing circumstances.

Guidelines:
Begin at the center:
Use all these factors in writing your statement:
Security:
your sense of worth, your emotional anchorage, your self esteem, your basic personal strength or lack of it.
Guidance:
your source of direction in life and your internal frame of reference that interrupts what's happening out there, your standards and principles that govern your decision making.
Wisdom:
your perspective on life, your sense of balance, your understanding of how the various parts and principles apply and relate to each other
Power:
your capacity to act, your strength to accomplish something. Your vital energy to make decisions and it also includes your capacity to overcome the deeply embedded habits and to cultivate more effective ones.

When these four factors are present together, harmonized by each other, they create the great force of noble personality, a balanced character, a beautifully integrated individual.
Your paradigm is the source from which your attitude and behaviors flow. A paradigm as Peach mentioned in one of the comments is like a pair of glasses; it affects the way you see everything in your life. If you look at things through the paradigm of correct principles, what you see in life is dramatically different from what you see through any other centered paradigm*.

Identify roles and goals;
your role as an individual, as a student, as a father or a mother, a manager and so forth. Write a statement for each, and set an affective goal that focuses primarily on results rather than activities.
Writing your mission in terms of the important roles in your life gives you balance and harmony. It keeps each role clearly, before you. You can review your roles frequently to make sure that you don't get totally absorbed by one role to the exclusion of the others that are equally or even more important.
Use your whole brain:
Although people use both sides of the brain, one side or the other tends to dominate in each individual. The ideal would be to cultivate and develop the ability to have good crossover between both sides of the brain so that a person could sense that the situation called for and then use the appropriate tool to deal with it. We live in a primary left brain dominant world, where words and measurements are enthroned, and the more creative, intuitive, sensing, artistic aspect of our nature is often subordinated.
We manage from the left side, but lead from the right side. Therefore a little tabbing to the right side of our brain is necessary to come up with sound, satisfying mission statements.
And btw; the first image your brain perceived when you did the young-old women test I posted in one of my previous posts, shows which side of your brain is predominant.

An exercise to tab the right brain:
1-Expand your perspective by visualizing a scenario in the future; your graduation, your wedding, your funeral, etc
2- Expand your mind by visualizing in rich detail the entire scenario, involving as many emotions and feelings as possible and involving as many of the senses as you can.

And there is another exercise which the author did not mention in his book but science had proved its efficiency in cultivating a successful crossover between both sides of the brain; this exercise is called the Alternate Nostril Breathing technique which is essential in most yoga classes.

*Most of us are unintentionally driven through a self centered paradigm or paradigms that is exhausting our energies and time at the cost of other important things in our life; money centered paradigm, religion centered paradigm, family or spouse centered paradigm, pleasure centered paradigm and position or job centered paradigm. etc

PS; This post is a continuation of the last post of 7HHEP.

I think mind maps would be suitable for this kind of planning.
