Would Women Vote Make Any Difference

After few hectic weeks of rebellious orange movement against corruption, and the dissolution of the parliament, we women find ourselves, for the first time, facing a huge challenge. A lot of writers and politicians are betting on our force to direct the outcome of the next parliament since our number exceeds that of men by more than a double. Some are betting that women are just followers of men and their tribes or cultural groups. Others have much higher hopes that we are more intelligent than that, especially when it comes to vital issues like reform in the country.
Now I’m no politician, neither intending to be one, yet, as a citizen I see it my duty to educate myself in this field. Especially that our experience in this area is just born today. Now I’m not posting this to promote anyone, although I support the 29 MP’s who stood by public voice and think that their existence in the next parliament is a must, especially that they are experienced and brave enough to stand against corruption in the government. Yet; I think that giving a vote is a huge responsibility; if there isn’t anyone that I can really trust in my constituent; I prefer not to vote at all.
I think attending lectures to have at least a sense of direction is a must at this stage , and as a contribution from me to my sisters;. I will be more active in the coming few weeks with Woman Cultural and Social Society to provide such lectures, given by writers and thinkers in the country for the benefit of all.
On another note; many people who are calling for reform and for some reason or another could not participate in the orange movement, now it’s their time to move. I do not blame the government for being corrupt; money and power are synonymous to corruption. Neither I blame the MP’s; each has his own agenda. But I blame the citizens; especially the ones with a “don’t care” label. The ones who have the right to vote, yet, due to their desperation, they don’t. Not voting for the right person is as bad as voting for a wrong person may be even worse. Now how do you know who is the right person and who is the wrong one? You do your homework.
I may be idealistic when it comes to reform, but at least I know that I have hope. Our national reserve is drying up sooner than we think; nothing would be left for our future generation if we didn’t act now.

I disagree, I do not believe in democracy, therefore, I do not believe in voting.

Well-said Ayya!

I'm truly worried about women participation in the forthcoming elections, and I wonder how their political affiliations - if they have any - will turn out to be.

My biggest concern is that women generally tend to be more conservative, and even royalistic, in their political convictions.

Honey, you are not idealistic at all - you are simply doing the right thing :*

Purg, if you didn't vote, a worthless someone will be a dictator and not you - so vote to ruin it for him, use your evil streak for a good purpose at least once in your life!!!

I refuse to acknowledge the merit of voting for anything or anyone.

Unless something major takes place, like uniting all the efforts towards reform, I’m afraid that the outcome of this parliament would be worse than the last especially with the government involved in full force.

The political/voting field is new to women, many of who truly are followers to men. so this election, maybe even the next, women will be affected by the leading men in their lives.

Not necessarily through forcing them to vote for specific nominees (no one can do that, after all, you vote by yourself) But because many women lack politial awareness, men in many cases will try to ?educate? them which might as well mean steer them into voting for whomever they want.

So by all means, educate women, I think this should be done everywhere, not only through Jam3iyah Nisa'yiah.

I wouldn’t say no to a cookie ;)

Yes, you are right Hazolat; educating women should be done everywhere, but eljam3iyah elnisa2ya can provide the means to do it. It is their responsibility at this stage, and since I’ve worked with them on women’s political rights before I think I can convince them to take this initiative, I’m thinking of a schedule of speeches of an hour max each day till the Election Day, it should be given by unbiased academics to broaden their political awareness and lead them to make their own decisions. And also we should find a way to reach women in tribal areas because they are the most suppressed and a strong parliament would definitely be to their benefit. Wi hatha illi agdar 3alaih.

LOL
Of course we will influence their decision, only to the direction of the best of the country. Have them ponder on better education, health and wiser dealing with our national income. Educate them on how to choose the fit person, what questions should be asked and what oaths should be taken by the candidates. How to study each electoral programs if there is any and so forth. To tell you the truth; I need to attend some lectures more than anyone. It is one of the ways to keep shliwee7 wi rab3ah barra ilmajlis :)
