A Never Ending Ordeal
I opened the door to start my day
The magnet cliché compelled its way
To tap the right side of my brain,
And probe the mordant refrain
It's done !!!
The gourmet is done
Was it medium, rare
Or well done!
April 25th I have a date
For forty years I had to wait
Never too late
Patience was always my trait!
Preparing for a so called feast
On which my rights were cooked by a beast
On high fire occasionally
And languidly on low heat
40 years to prepare a meal
Would it poison me to death!
Or would it restore my breath!
That's another chapter in my ordeal

The minute I saw that headline on the newspaper, my heart quenched and a sarcastic smile drew itself to my face, my mind kept buzzing “when will this be over “ , I’m sick and tiered of being manipulate, humiliated and abused. any how, I can see your poem has to do with women rights...I get the sarcastic tone to it, which makes me wonder what is the update on women rights in Kuwait?

The government had appointed April 12, 2005 for voting on a bill that grants women participation in municipality, and 25th April was set to vote on their political rights in the parliament.
The government declares that it has granted 36 votes in the municipality and 32 in the parliament, to me the numbers still sound suspicious. Chances are still 50/50.

A lot of efforts need to be exerted, with the mentalities of most members in this parliament, we need a miracle.
To be honest with you I don’t think that the government is serious about women; my fear is that we’re being used as propaganda for other political games; like the mass of minister’s investigations, terrorism in the country, US pressure and so forth. Because I think that the government can do better than that. I hope I’m wrong.
I don’t think you are wrong to be skeptical about government intentions regarding this issue and I think that there is a lot of truth to the idea that some are using the struggle for women’s rights as a political smoke-screen. The fundamental problem still facing the Arab world is institutional. It is the lack of strong democratic institutions that uphold the rule of law and guard human freedom and human rights that is at the core of the problem. Passing a few laws that on the books give women their rights without strong institutions to protect those rights is useless. It’s a smoke-screen. However, you ladies need to continue fighting because you are doing so for many more women than those inside Kuwait. I have 5 sisters and I feel as though you are fighting for them too.
I do agree with you, you are absolutely right about “Passing a few laws that on the books give women their rights without strong institutions to protect those rights is useless”, and gaining our political rights is one step towards reform in the institution. We have a long way to go and a lot of obstacles to tackle so we could reach a decent democracy.
I’m sure you did understand what I meant, but let me emphasize;
Think about it as a goal out there, far from your reach, and walk the way picking up bets and pieces toward that goal, making sure that these pieces would take you one step further, no matter how small, toward your goal. Thanks for the insite.
